Marendë was one of the original Valier to descend to Arda, but she didn't appear in any of the record books, and practically no one ever heard her name spoken in casual conversation. Even the rest of the Ainur were prone to forget to include her in the official rosters. On Órë, things are much the same.
She preferred a quiet existence from the very earliest days, spending most of her time tending the hearths and encouraging fellowship between her fellow Ainur; when the Children awoke, her heart was given wholly to them. She has lived and moved among them ever since, working behind the scenes to foster unity within families and between nations. From Ñolofinwë's Mereth Aderthad to the valiant loyalty of the Folk of Hador, from the friendship between Findaráto and the Bëorings to the (sadly short-lived) Quendi-Dwarven alliances, from Findekáno's rescue of Russandol to the Union of Maedhros, from the abolition of slavery and segregation to the United Nations—Marendë's soft touch is visible throughout history, if one knows where to look.
Marendë is the aunt of Vendórë and Estë, and she remains unwed. Her title is Massánië, the Bread-giver, possibly in reference to the ages-old symbolism of folks breaking bread together. She may also have introduced lembas to the Quendi.
